Major update emerges regarding Suryakumar Yadav and the 2026 Ranji Trophy.
India’s 2026 T20 World Cup‑winning captain Suryakumar Yadav did not secure a spot in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy 2026‑27 opening match squad. He had expressed a desire to remain available for Mumbai, but the selectors have decided to keep him out of the team for now.
According to Mumbai’s chief selector Rajesh Pawar, Suryakumar Yadav needs to play a few matches to regain his rhythm before returning to competitive red‑ball cricket. The selectors believe that, after being away from first‑class cricket for a long period, it would be better for him to get match practice rather than being placed directly in the Ranji team.
Why is Suryakumar Yadav not in the Ranji Trophy 2026?
Suryakumar Yadav will not feature in the opening match of the Ranji Trophy 2026. Mumbai’s chief selector Rajesh Pawar explained that Suryakumar has not played any red‑ball match in the past roughly 18 months.
Pawar added that Suryakumar is a big‑match player and a proven batsman for Mumbai. Hence, the team management wants him to participate in a few red‑ball games first, find his rhythm, and then make a comeback to the Mumbai side.
The decision is said to be linked to match fitness and preparation for red‑ball cricket rather than questioning Suryakumar’s performance.
First‑class cricket record of Suryakumar
Suryakumar Yadav has a solid first‑class record. In 86 matches he has scored 5,758 runs at an average of 42.33, including 14 centuries and 30 half‑centuries.
His highest unbeaten score in first‑class cricket is 200 runs, indicating his ability to play big innings in the longer format.
However, his international Test career has been brief. Consequently, domestic red‑ball cricket could serve as an important avenue for him to strengthen his technique and match rhythm.
Debut in the Nagpur Test
Suryakumar Yadav made his international Test debut in 2023 against Australia in the Nagpur Test, scoring only eight runs in that match.
He has not received another opportunity to play for the Indian Test side since then. Despite his stellar success in limited‑overs cricket, his international career in red‑ball cricket has not progressed.
Now, at 36, a return to domestic cricket could help Suryakumar regain his competitive cricket rhythm.
Possible comeback in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
After missing out on the Ranji Trophy opening match, Suryakumar Yadav may now set his sights on the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2026.
According to reports, Mumbai’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign begins on 14 November against Hyderabad. Through this tournament, Suryakumar could make a return to competitive cricket.
T20 cricket is one of Suryakumar’s strongest formats. Therefore, selectors’ …
